2000 Johnson 200hp Venom

The engine will not turn over and the trim does not work. The power trim relays buzz or click when trying to use the trim motor. I have replaced both relays with no change to the trim operation.

Ignition switch ohms out good, but the LEDs that should come on in the start cycle do not come on and motor will not turn over. Boat was recently purcashed from someone who rarely used it, was garage kept.

Looking for the starter fuse, where is it? Picture?

Thanks

Start with the basics.

1. Are the batteries fully charged?

2. Are the battery connections clean and tight?

3. Are all the wires meant to be connected to the battery on the right posts? There should be at least two wires on each teminal. A large set for starter and engine power, another set for boat power (lights, etc) and possibly a third set for the bilge pump if it has a float switch.

Sounds a lot like you have a low voltage problem.

Batteries show 12.5v, terminals very clean. Guess I will have to trace the power wire with a volt meter.

Where is the started fuse?

Need to have batteries load tested a weak battery can show 12.5 volts at no-load. Starter fuse should be vry close to the starter and solenoid; bad fuse will not have any effect on trim motor. Need to check connection of the blue&green wires just before the relay box; You can unhook this connection and use a battery directly to the trim motor to see if it will run. Good Luck.

Power and ground straight to the trim motor works, so the motor is good actually recently replaced by the original ownerView attachment 123887

Then I would check the connection itself; mine gets a little corrosion or something in it and quits working about once a year; a good spray of battery cleaner in it and i'm good to go again.

Well I have learned that just because a battery connection looks real clean you better still give a good pull on it to see if it is tight. Previous owner had sprayed the battery terminals with some red goo but did not tighten the battery terminals tight enough. Took everything apart and cleaned the connectors, post, etc. As soon as I did that I had ignition back and trim on the down side.

Something though happened when I got power restored. As soon as I reconnected the battery ground it sounded as if one of the power trim relays was stuck, I could hear it buzzing almost an arching sound preceded by the dreadful smell of something is burning. I got the cowl off to see either some smoke from the engine (no it was not running) or maybe my breath. It was cold. Anyway I cannot find any burned wires but the issue now is I only have down trim, no up trim. Connected power straight to the connector that goes to the trim motor and up / down work. Both relays sound the same when trying up or down so I know I am getting power. It looks like the connector that the relays plug into on one side is a little distorted (heat from the buzzing relay ????)

Any ideas before I pulled the relay board ?

I'd check the trim switches to see if any of them are sticking one way or the other. You did clean the blue/green wire connector just under the relay box didn't you?

"Other trim switches" you mean like the one on the steering column, the shifter, and the bow? The Blue/green connector under the relay box that goes stright to the trim motors is clean, that is where I tested the trim motor operation

Yep, those switches; if none are sticking then I'd suspect yu have a "hot" wire going to ground maybe in the relay box or around it. Good luck

Re: Johnson 200 hp Motor will not turn over, power trim relays buzzing

The problem was the red jumper wire (power) between the two power trim relays. For some reason it got hot enought to melt the plastic on one side of the realy box. The wire also pulled out of the relay connector in the relay box and when I started cutting back what was left of the good wire it was mostly empty wire insulation. The center part of the wire was just gone but the insulation was still inpact and not burned. Must have just corroded away ??? Anyway I was able to replace the connector in the housing and reconnect the jumper wire now the trim works. Have pictures will post tomorrow.
