Hello folks,
I have a 1988 (I think) Johnson motor. Serial # j48eslccc. My lower unit is shot. My boat mechanic (a shade tree fellow) told me any lower unit from a Johnson or Evinrude 40, 48, 50 up to a 1993 will work (with 20" shaft). I found a 1993 40 horse Johnson tracker in the paper (real cheap) and bought it (no pressure in one cylinder). I removed the lower unit to find it would not work. The shaft was bigger (thicker). My shaft has a 14 spine, and the 1993 had a 17 spine. The model number on the 1993 is tj40eletb. The exhaust ports and everything else do not match as well. Obviously the unit will not work. My question... what other units are compatible with mine? I can not seem to find my exact year model and want to know my options. Thanks in advance for all your help! Shane.
