I had a 77 Evinrude with electric choke at the key that was suppose to be held in to choke. Just bought an 83 Johnson 140 and the seller said to only click the key in 3 or 4 times to prime and choke. On the 1983 Johnson electric choke should the key be held in or just clicked 3 or 4 times?

Hold the key in while you crank it til it fires. If it doesn't remain running crank again withourt choking it.

Duxman,

Do this.

1. Pump up primer bulb.

2. Turn key to "ON" not start.

3. Push key in, hold and count to eight.

4. Release key and start engine.

You may have to bump the key in a few times as it's warming up.

This is for starting cold only. When warm, you should beable to just turn the key and fire it up.

Does the 77 have a primer solenoid or does it close butterflys.

The older motors like the 77 had butterflies which can be easily converted to a primer system like the 83 Duxman aquired.

I need to read more carefully. I thought we were trying to start the 77.
