I have acquired an 18 hp Johnson burgundy and and white 1958 model I think. It came w/o a recoil starter. I have wound a rope around the flywheel and found that it seems to have good compression and adequate spark. Put gas in tank, 2 new spark plugs, and pumped it up and it has spit around and tried to start. To make a long story short I need a complete recoil starter. Does anyone have one here for sale. I found one on ebay, however it says it is from a 1960 model and I assume it is an Evinrude since it is metallic blue. Anyone know if it will work w/ my motor? T/Y.

Re: johnson 18 hp recoil starter

If the 18hp recoil on eBay has two 3/8" dia. cast-in loops on either side of the rope-exit, then it should work for you. You would still need the small plate that covers the opening in the cowling where the rope comes through, plus the related springs and grommets that make it snug. BUT, the motor will run just fine without the cover, etc., it will just be a little noisier without that cover. Actually, a recoil without the loops I mentioned will work too, but it won't be able to take the plate, as the plate has two pins that mount in the loops.
