i am not sure what the knob near the starter pull cord is for? it is connected to the cauburator but i am not sure what it is for. i know when i turn it one way the idle changes and the motor wants to die out. any advice what this is for and what the setting should be. i already took off the airfilter and messed with the screw so it is not to the factory setting. should i close it all the way before putting the air filter on?

The knob is the low speed needle. It's rough setting is 1 1/2 turns out from GENTLY seated. After the engine is warm, adjust the needle for best idle in gear. Engine should be on the boat, in the water underway.

A good rule of thumb is, if you don't know what it is, don't turn it...d:) If you are really interested in keeping the engine running top notch, invest in a service manual. It will tell you all you need to know about the engine and will save you lots of $ in the long run.

The model number is on a metal tag that is fastened to the port transom bracket. Post the number here and we can help with the year.

Service manual reprints can be bought through Ken Cook Co.....they have a site....just search the name. Easy to find.
