i have a 1985 14 hp and i cant get the lower unit off i took out all the bolts and still no luck. there are 4 bolts holding it to the midsection and a stud with a nut on it going from the lower unit to the midsection thats where is seems to be stuck. i removed the 4 bolts and nut and can get the lower unit to move back and forth but it seems to be pivoting on the stud that i cant get free. i tryed heat and PB BLASTER with not luck so far is there a trick to this ? also this is a long shaft engine but looks like it can be made a short shaft by removing an extenchan peice thats between the mid section and the lower unit its about 6 inchs long and bolts on just like the lower unit with 4 bolts. i have also removed them 4 bolts with no luck that seems to move on the stud also like the lower unit does.i also have been lookin for a shop manual for this engine with no luck i am told its a commercial engine and not that many where made

it wont drop down far enough to see anything i even tryed shifting and it wont drop down at all
i have done lower units before on my 9.5 and a few 9.9 and never had this problem from the looks for it and the bolts it does not look like it was ever taken apart because everything was painted the original color and not scratched up at all. it belonged to a college kid so i am sure he just ran it till it would not run anymore. i got it running like a top with new fuel lines.

I think that motor disconnects the shift linkage behing the water intake screens. Pull the screens off and take a look.

Wayne.... I may have lost track but it seems to me that the 14hp was only built in 1988 and 1989. What is the model number of the engine?

If it is one of the above, the lower unit is of the older style units that does not have the thru prop exhaust setup. The shift connector would be the usual brass (two bolt) connector, visible only when the lower unit is dropped down slightly with the gear shift lever in the reverse position.

If you've removed the lower unit bolts and the nut, but the unit will not drop down far enough to see the shift connector, I would suspect that the stud is frozen somewhat with salt etc, or that the upper portion of the driveshaft is stuck in the crankshaft.

thanks Joe for the info thats kinda what i was thinking myself but i just wanted to make sure.before i took a BFH to it haha.i have been heating it and cooling it with PB BLASTER hopping to work it in there i will just have to keep up on it i am pretty sure thats where it is stuck because i seen the salt power under the washer and around the threads of the stud.yes your right on key with the lower end being the old style.
here is the tag #'s
HJ14RSLF
0211705

I shortened my 1978 15HP and tried to have my local repair shop locate the shaft and shift rod. He ended up cutting and welding the parts. A bit of caution though...the shift rod has an angle bent in it and if this isn't welded back in the same plane as it was orignially, it won't seat properly in the gear box.

Wayne, One thing to consider is it would be cheaper and more mechanically sound if you bought a jack plate for your boat and motor. This way you could adjust it to fit your needs, Bass pro sells a plate for motors up to 35hp for about $60. Cheap price to pay as opposed to fabricating a drive shaft and shift linkage.
