Hi All,

Does anyone one know the reputation of the 140hp Johnson's - I am a first time buyer and I was hoping that on of the experts would be able to help me.

Are they reliable?
How is the gas consumption?

The model I am looking at is in the late 70's

I undertand that all engines are different, but sometimes there is a pattern.

Thanks in advance,

I recall that this was one of the few motors whose hp was overrated substantially. Only made 130 hp on a good day.

Re: Johnson 140hp?

Kind of a tempermental engine. Before 82 they came from the factory with what they called high ring pistons. The rings were set way high on the piston. This made them break and trip over the rings when they were loaded with carbon. Carbon is a problem on those old crossflows, but not if you run a decarbon solution thru them every 50 hrs. I would find out if she's ever been rebuilt. If she has then they probably installed the low ring piston back in her.

mbb, is right a hp, on their best day they only produced 128hp. But it was enough to legally call it a 140hp figuring the +- 10% leaway the NMMA gives them.
