Re: Johnson 140

1979 Johnson 140 hp............. crossflow. The loopers came about in the mid 80's. There's been several discussions on the performance issues of crossflows vs. loopers. Try doing a search on that topic for more information. In a nut shell, no comparison in terms of performance,.......... loopers........hands down. The crossflows were very dependable and reliable runners though. Many are still running strong today. Mine included. I would strongly suggest you read up on decarbing your outboard. It should be high on your list of anual preventative maintanence items in order to keep it healthy. If I'd had known about, and implemented this, I'd have never had to rebuild the one I own. Carbon deposits were the ultimate downfall of my '79 E'rude 140. For this reason, I strongly suggest you give this some attention. It's a very easy procedure to follow. Here's a link to read up on regarding the how to's of the decarb process......................

You have a cross flow. The loopers I believe came out in 1985.
