OK, so the impeller on the 86 120 V4 I am restoring ate itself alive. I did a full replacement kit and noticed the water intake tube (the copper one in the midsection) looks like someone has been chewing on it, I put it back together because it was working before....bad idea, no flow. Pulled tubes going to tstats and no flow, no flow out of pee hole, flow out of hub and upper exhaust ports but the motor gets HOT really quick. Going to pull the tstats this evening and try to clean/backflush and try to hook a hose up to my intake tube. Hopefully I can get a seal. I suspect some impeller found its way into the system. My question is how hard is it to replace this part? None of my manuals SELOC or CLYMER have anything on it. I can see a parts break down and it looks like I can just pull it out of the grommet? Am I looking at something more involved?

Im not sure if powerhead needs to come off, that model seems to have a different setup then im use too
Id start with back flushing , instead of trying to flush it up and through as the new impellor would of being as good a device as any to do that

By ,"looks like it's been chewed on" ,I assume you mean it has holes in it. Anyway ,the tube you seem to be referring to is the water pump discharge tube, not the pump intake. If this tube is chewed up ,as in leaking, it will not transfer water properly to the engine block. It needs to be fixed.

So it at one point was not lined up and is now “s” shaped. Vernacular aside....anyone know how to replace this thing?

It would appear that someone tried to grab it with pliers and it would not come out.-----Pretty sure you have to pull the powerhead to replace it.----I will check some of these midsections laying around to confirm that fact.

Sooo....i got a guy that has a 97 johnson 115 for 900.00. Says compression is good. Will check obviously. Anything else i should be aware of....not really excited about pulling a powerhead on a 32 year old motor for a 5.00 peice of copper....

Factory manual shows powerhead remove when servicing water tube.-------Is the water tube buckled / pinched / blocked ?----If not you can consider cutting of the bad part and splicing on a new bit at the correct length to enter the pump and seal.

sorry its been a while, been busy at work. I got the powerhead off, looks like I will need to remove the adapter plate as well, which may be problematic, most of the hardware is very corroded and the four forward bolts for the adapter plate are going to have to be cut off. Tube is pushed so far into the midsection I cant reach it to repair and its got a pretty good kink in it. anyone got a midsection lying around for cheap? I cant even get the bolts on the pivot shaft to budge with a 4ft breaker bar. What years parts are compatible with this engine?

I only found one possible on ebay after a few hours of looking. Its for a 91 Evinrude 120. Not sure if interchangeable though.
