I have a Johnson 120 hp outboard that drinks gas. The sucker is less fuel efficient than my 1971 Evin. 115hp. Is this normal. I burn about 6gal in 45 min or so (skiing), and I push a little boat (1971 Glastron GT 160).

Any help would be great!
Thanks,
-Jeff

Howdy, gunner. I never had one of those cross scavenged V4s that wasn't a gas hog, and you are working it pretty hard. I'd say that your results are, unfortunately, normal.
Sorry 'bout that.
JB

I thought that sucker might have a different stroke. Is the block used for something else? Or is it jetted to a higher HP or what?

Thanks,
--Jeff

Re: Johnson 120 hp Outboard

The 120 is a looper and a great motor. What year is it? Is it stock? IE -- did someone put V6 big bore carbs on it? The GT 160 is a very easy boat to push and if it's propped out correctly it should be fine (and a rocket). What RPM will it turn? How does it idle? Make sure the manual valve on the primer is closed all the way. Also when the motor is running pull one of the small primer lines to make sure the diaphram isn't leaking. Be very careful, the nipples on the primer are very easy to break. Good luck!

Boy am I embarrassed. I thought the 120 shared a block with the 85 to 115 engines. Sorry about that, gunner.
JB
