Johnson 115 won't go into gear

I have a 1990 model Johnson outboard that suddenly will not go forward. I was on the lake Wednesday running the boat, I stopped and anchored to fish a while and when I started up it would only go backwards. Even pushing the controls forward, it would still go only backwards--any info is appreciated.

check cable connections, disconnect at engine and shift manually. they are 17 year old cables.

Yep, sounds like a broken shift cable or something came loose in the shift linkage or control box.

ran good for 15 minutes when i started it back up would not go into any gear i'm pretty sure it's not linkage everything there looked fine what do i check first?
