Hi

Johnson 115 motor Dominator hull
Compression is 8 bar all four cylinders

On the engine mount bracket we have:
Model : J115 TLCTES Serial :J88 42041

How can I trace the year model?
Where can I obtain parts?

Any useful info about these motors I need to know?

Tx

Sounds like a 1990 model.-----Reread model #------Simple and very good motor when it left the factory.-----Install a new water pump impeller before leaving the dock.-----Any boat shop will get you the parts I think.-----crowley marine -----evinrudeparts.ca----- and this site you are on.-----your location?

Thanks. Location : South Africa which is why I ask about parts. Will lookup Crowley & Evinr. Tx.

Had HT leads checked, timing sorted. Coils good.

Impeller & water pump awesome. Pumps water just on cranking at startup.

Noticed general consensus online backs Champion plugs. Battling to find.
NGK equivalent is H9S also a battle - opted for H8Sh - the non resistor one as per forums/info online.

Using mineral Outboard Castrol 2T NMMA certified TC-W3 what previous owner swore by. Seeing it is pre 2000.

Seems to have fuel starvation. Runs then bogs down. But when she goes "whoaaa!" Smooth. Amazing gearbox too.

An associate who has boat shop says the J115 carbs - even if you strip & find no dirt & clean - they suddenly work. Very sensitive carbs apparently.

Or time to check fuel pump?

Thanks once again.

Try pumping the fuel line primer ball to see if that effects it when it's bogging.

To repeat an earlier request....re-post the model number. The model you posted is incorrect.

Those carburetors are NOT SENSITIVE at all.----Very simple and reliable.-----But if carburetor bowls ( plastic ? ) are warped you may see issues.

Have a photo of the plate - it reads:
MODEL No. J115TLCTE
SERIAL No. J8842041
OPERATING RANGE 4500 TO 5500 R.P.M.
8.1.A. HORSEPOWER 115 AT 5000 R.P.M.
?.8.? ------- POWER 81.3 KW AT 5000 R.P.M.
----- ARD MARINE CORPORATION
----- GA ILLINOIS U.S.A.
On a silver plate some text corroded..
Am in South Africa
Another thread here the guy was speaking
the T is for "Trim" the CTE means 80's era looks about right it seems to be +- 1985 - 1990

Thank you

I agree with your statement on those carbs. Will check on plastic bowls however I think is fuel pressure slump pre fuel pump. As she get under planing load she holds back idling along no problem.

The primer felt a bit soft to my liking
So tightened the pickup at tank (pickup was able to swivel - once I fastened the plastic nut holding it, it could no longer swivel - but that should not have affect air into fuel line decreasing pressure)

Replacing fuel filter I fastened clamps at tank pickup and on fuel filter and the primer bulb was hard almost immediately.

Then the rain came lol so will check it out 2m if weather permits.

Thank you. On primer I posted to another reply about tightening fuel line clamps - suddenly primer was muuch harder suggesting pre primer air suction issues..

Then rain showed up haha will check 2m and report

Hi your reply says "delete" yet on email it shows you asked : "Could it be J115 FTL ECS?" thread not visible this side in forum.

But thank you. The plate on bracket reads verbatim:

MODEL No. J115TLCTE
SERIAL No. J8842041
OPERATING RANGE 4500 TO 5500 R.P.M.
8.1.A?. HORSEPOWER 115 AT 5000 R.P.M.

Dotted lines & ? = corroded text

You started poorly with an incorrect model #.-----No plastic float bowls in 83 model year.-----So it is 100% a 1983 model.----Hence the request to reread the model #,-----Parts are easy to find here. ----Trouble shooting is required by you.----Did you witness a compression test ?----Post the actual compression test values here.----A MUST do , first step in trouble shooting a 43 year old motor !

Thank you so much

Yeah... apologies - extra S on end a typo (formatting S for Serial - no edit here)

1983 sounds in ball park awesome to know love this motor

Compression 116 psi all four cylinders (8 bar in our lingo)

Starts like a dream.

Back to tightening clamps on fuel line from tank to filter and primer was hard rain interrupted. Will give it a crack tomorrow

To add:

Began with starter - wrongly assembled - redone.
Cranks like sweetness.
Then comp test Thursday. 8 bar each cyl.
Then one coil wiring off - resolved.
Checked HT leads - all good.
Got her revving - then timing sorted.

Took her to water yesterday eve. Planed quick - throttle needs adjusting - as if theres a bit more there. Only hits real power on WOT - last half inch on throttle seemed to offer another 30% when it did tho boat lurched forward - for a short while

scary fast on 15 ft hull

However continuous load brings erratic revs - we pump primer bulb - slight help bit no... throttle back and she'll idle along fine

Seems like heavier load brings about fuel starvation??

What is the spec psi comp for this motor? 120?

I respect the knowledge you guys have however thats all I have for you so far.

Thank you

if hand pumping helps stabalyze things no harm is replacing it... check vacum pulse driving the pump in case it is loosing crankcase case pulse pressure from the back side ... screws thights ?

check mesh filter under inlet cap check for mushy hoses or any fuel restrictions between tank pick up and fuel ou of pump to carbs

Clamps have to correct as well. No air can enter the fuel delivery system.

Thank you. Gotcha. You guys are super helpful.

Began checking fuel syst from tank today.

Primer medium hard primed pre ignition beforehand. After replacing fuel filter and tightening fuel line clamps, primer bulb was hard? Significantly.

Rain interfered - plan to test under load when it abates.

Yet multiple issues along fuel line could be the gremlin - everything you guys are mentioning.

on my suzuki 85 fuel filter is between primer & pump.

on the Johnson it is after tank before primer? Does that matter?
