johnson 115 hp needs rings low comp

the motor has low comp from over heating, how hard would it be to put rings in it .is that a job that i can do myself, without takeing the whole motor apart .or leave it to the pro's

Before you overhaul it, remove the cylinder heads and look at the head gaskets. Make sure and take a good look at the cylinder walls and pistons for damage. If you don't see any damage, make sure the heads are flat, install new head gaskets and recheck the compression. Might save you some bucks.
By the way, how hot did it get?

I don't know bought it that way, coils look like they started to melt . comp 1=100 2=75 3=85 4=75 the motor is a spl runs but won't idal out,

Will it run? Do a decarb and then recheck the compression, if it woun't come up then pull the heads and have a look.

yes, it will run. only at high speed runs & sounds good just won't idal at all. put new coils on it.

Pull the heads and have a look, let us know what you find.

If it overheated new rings wont help as cylinder will be out of round, just bore it and overhaul it..

What year 115. They used different heads over the years, so the original factory compression numbers vary quite a bit between some years. Good idea to pull the heads and check the cylinder sleeves first. If everything looks normal, check the heads for flatness, then try new head gaskets.
