I have a 1989 Johnson 110 with very low time. The last 3 times I've took it out (last 2 weeks) it has begun to leave a horrible heavy oil residue on stern and engine. I have two things I was wanting to run by you folks that I thought maybe was the culprit.
First when you trailer the boat and look up at the bottom of the engine where the gear housing meets the bottom of the engine cowl after using for several hours. There is a heavy dark brown oil sludge stream running from aft of where the shift shaft goes through. It looks like it would be right up under the crankcase area. It will ooze all the way down the gear housing in a small stream and of course it gets all in the water and on the engine and boat.
Could it be any of the following two guesses?
#1 Could it possibly be the lower crankshaft seal leaking oil and fuel from the crankcase?
#2 A month or so ago I purchased a Wal Mart brand two stroke oil that had the same certification standards (according to package) that the Evinrude / Johnson oil had. After using this stuff for a month and a half of light duty. My engine began running rough, hard starting, bad idle, smoking very badly too.
Then this week my "low oil" alarm started going off(with 1/2 tank of oil in reservoir).
Last night I removed all of the remaining cheap "Wal Mart High Tech" brand from the reservoir. I added Penzoil MARINE oil instead. Well this morning after about and hour of that alarm still intermittantly sounding "low oil". The alarm stopped and the engine started running like it's old self. Spent all day trolling / fishing and it ran super. All except one thing. I still had horrible amounts of the oil residue and still had the stream of thick oil sludge coming down the gear case housing again.
Could the cheap oil have caused all this extra residue? Or has a seal gone bad on crankshaft?
Thanks,
AB
