I have a johnson seahorse 10hp QD-21. Recently acquired. Did a compression test (good numbers), new plugs, changed the oil, new lower sphaghetti seal..etc. Took it out last week ran pretty good (out about 1 hour), a little adjusting of high/low speed adjustments. Took it out again today, first 45 minutes to hour it ran great then while full throttle it slowed to about half the horsepower, pumped the trottle for a bit and was not getting full power. I cruised in slow speed to a safer area (closer to shore)LOL. At first I thought I had seized 1 piston??....I took the cover off and could see air in the gas line, put it in neutral and pumped the trottle and it seemed to get proper gas flow again. With cover back on and back in drive she cruised at full speed for another hour with no issues.
I'm leaving soon for a week long fishing trip...anything I should be concerned with.

Running 24-1 ratio with new gas from this year. Also, the ball from the gas tank line was not staying hard while running.

Thx..Ron

The ball wont stay hard, only gets firm when you fill the bowl, after that she is a one way valve.

Im going to assume you have clear fuel line on then? If it is original line, I would say change it to new ethanol proof. Are the connections all good and tight? Which section of fuel line were you observing bubbles? Did you do the carb?

Hi Ron I used to have a QD-22 myself. It sounds like you may have some crud in the carb and/or a small air leak. I would give the carb a good cleaning and rebuild along with replacing the fuel lines per the earlier post. Just take the old ones with you to the auto store and they can cut some new ones to length for a few bucks. Here are some handy links to help you give it the once over. You can get any routine parts (carb kit, tune up kit, etc...) you may need right here at iboats. Holler if you get stuck.

Dropping to half power, and sometimes recovering to full power is a classic symptom of dropping a cylinder. It is only running on one cylinder when you are experiencing the lack of power. Then the other cylinder cuts back in and away you go.

Carburetor will NOT make it run on one cylinder. You have an ignition problem. It will not self-heal. Flywheel must come off for inspection and repairs. Breaker points are a for-sure possibility. And if it is still running on the original coils, they most likely are shot. All that stuff is available right here at iboats.

Re: Johnson 10hp

Thank's for all the great info...sounds like I have some tuning up to do before my trip. I do believe it's either fuel or coil related. It is the original clear gas line to carb..it is rock hard. I think it should be soft and/or squeezable. I will change that this week. I think I should also inspect the fuel line/filter in my tank. Maybe not pumping enough fuel from tank to motor???

High Trim..I have not done anything with the carb. That might also be something to do this week. I see you live in Hamilton, I too live in Hamilton (west mountain).

I will start from easiest solutions (fuel problems)..then coils..then check ignition!! Was purring like a cat but I guess I want it purring like a kitten.. :)

Re: Johnson 10hp

Just an update..brought my motor to Chris..aka high trim yesterday. took the flywheel off and the coils were new but the points were off (gap), 1 we figured was probably about .035-.040...the other was closer at about .022 (could have caused the timing issues). Chris took the carb apart and inspected and cleaned and all was pretty good...also changed the clear gas line (from fuel pump to carb) to a ethanol line. Chris had it purring like a kitten :) Said it was his hobby and wouldn't accept any $$...still some good people around. I'll drop of a case of beer!! Chris, thx again for the tune up and beer :D

No worries, should be good for another 50 years. Hope you and your dad enjoy the fishing trip.

By the way, found the case of beer at the door today, not necessary but thank you. Also found the washers, lol. (All of my washers were bent from my puller so he went and bought me a big bag of them!)
