Hello,

If it has the sort of clutch I think it does, it is the two clutch bearings that engage with the forward gear, I fixed one yesterday, exact same symtoms, it's a simple job if a little fiddly. If you take the prop off, drain the gearbox then take the prop shaft out (you shouldn't need to take your whole gearbox off to do this but it does make it easier if you do) you should find your reverse gear attached to the middle of the prop shaft and there will be a spring loaded rod which goes in and out of the end of the prop shaft, that is your clutch, be careful not to let it spring out. If you look at the end of the prop shaft furthest away from the prop but before the spring loaded part you may see two empty holes, in which sit two steel balls, if those balls are missing that's your problem. It doesn't take long to do this, maybe ten minutes so it's worth a look.

I have an idea: Tell us what outboard you have. There have been Johnson outboards made since the 1920s, and in many sizes and models. Once we know which one you might have, we can probably help you diagnose your problem. Look for the model number near the transom mount, then give it to us.

Actually, I took the time to look, and it's a Lark V, a 40hp.

The problem is almost certainly that the shift rod is not fully engaged in the connector behind the side panel on the midsection. If it is not engaged fully, with the bolt passing in the groove, it will have these exact symptoms.

Just being clamped in the connector, without being properly located by the bolt in the loop, it will shift into reverse and neutral, but cannot lift high enough to fully engage the forward gear. Happens all the time. You can't tell by looking at the linkage. You must remove the clamp bolt, which is probably stripped now, to see whether it aligns with the groove in the shift rod.

A shift dog problem has somewhat different symptoms. If a Big Twin from that era shifts only into neutral and reverse, the problem is the shift rod in the connector, 95% of the time.

Eventually, the rod will slip, and the boat will only go in reverse. He's going to need a new bolt, because this situation virtually always strips the threads on the bolt. He may need a new connector, as well.

This question would have been a lot simpler had the OP posted the model of his engine.

i have same problem i have the manual and i know what the problem is.

Ok you have the gearshift handle. Their is a clamp screw (Flathead) undo that and their is a 11mm adjustment screw. Mine was all the way forward so i had to make it so it was al the way at the back of the adjustment. I will take it out tomorrow and see if it works.
Good luck Matt
I just had it running after years of sitting i get 1/2 way up river and it gets out of gear o man wtf. Had to steer by hand while holding the shift lever towards the boat. No i need a high speed adjustment an dill be gold.
