Re: Jetski Buying - What to watch out for
I was recently in your shoes a few months ago. I ran across a deal for two Tigersharks and trailer. I didn't know squat about skis and have learned a ton over the few months I have owned them.
1. First thing is make sure they run. See if the owner will allow you to take them home or at least let you ride them for a day.
2. Look for any cracks, etc. in the gelcoat. Look at the belly of the boat to see if it has any gouges where they've been beaching them on rocks, roots, or bunkless trailers....I'm serious.
3. Check the compression. This is critical to two strokes and will tell you if they are in need of a rebuild. Most
two pistons average ~150 psi per cylinder. Both cylinders should be within 5% of each other.
4. Look at the impeller. Shine your flashlight in the jet and see if there are any dings or chunks missing.
5. Look at the bilge for any oil leaks or lack of maintenance.
If you purchase one, a good idea is to change all the filters and drain any remaining fuel and start with a fresh fillup. You may even consider blocking off the oil injection and premix your fuel. I did this to both of mine.
