How important is the shape etc of the impeller in an OB jet drive unit? I have a 50 HP Merc with a San Leandro jet pump, and the impeller seems worn. It fits the housing well as nearly as I can tell, but the leading edges of the impeller vanes are worn concave and dull. <br /> Will this condition diminish performance? Can I have the impeller reground/reshaped, or should I purchase a new one?

Re: jet drive impeller

The amount of wear on your impeller can dramatically effect it's performance.I don't know the wear that you are looking at,but it sounds at minimum marginaly acceptable. You can doctor these impellers up by filing down the top of the blades and shimming it down in the shoe.

You need to keep the leading edges of the impeller sharp!!! I file mine every few months. You might think about purchasing a stainless steel impeller ($400), it will outperform an aluminum unit and last longer. Check out this site. http://www.wooldridgeboats.com/wooldridgetop.html
