I drove a couple of them, a Diesel and a V6.

The thought of towing even 3,000lb with one gives me the shakes.

The diesel version has sufficient grunt but any short wheelbase vehicle, like the Liberty is not the kind of vehicle I would select for high speed freeway towing. Obviously a 5000# load requires trailer brakes so stopping shouldn't be an issue but handling would be in an emergency maneuver. Seems to me this isanother "tail wagging the dog" scenario.

with the short wheel base you will be rocking around abit on the highway towing something heavy which makes it unstable and dangerous.

Re: Jeep Liberty 2006 V6

I was very close to buying one of the CRD libertys. I borrowed my mom's(with a v6) to hook it up to my boat to see how it felt with my boat. 20ft fish and ski. The jeep towed it just fine, stopping was ok. But this was on short around a country block trip at no more than 40 mph. I would be hesitant to take off on a one or two hour trip as I think the trying to overcome the tail wagging the dog effect would be tiring on the highway. We ended up not purchasing the liberty CRD as this was a leftover 05 in September 06 and were only taking like 4 grand off the purchase price. I get more than that off with my supplier disount. We opted for an 02 tahoe that we purchased for about 10 grand less than the liberty. So the ultimate decision was price. At any rate, if it were me, I think I would opt for a larger tow vehicle depending on what you tow. I have seen some V6 liberty's towing fairly large trailers including one with a modified stock car and all the associated equipment.

I passed one towing a small travel trailer. It was a windy day and the rig was a definite traffic hazard.

I looked at jeeps.ended up buying the least expensive used late model truck i could find.ended up with a 2003 dodge quad cab ,8' box ,manual transmission.trailering my boat is easy.the bigger truck makes it feel the same as not towing anything at all.can't imagine towing with a smaller vehicle

the wife has an 06 liberty sport, and i have an 06 nissan frontier crew cab... both have 4wd and i have towed the boat with both... the only difference i noticed was take off power and a slight braking difference... the jeep handled well even at highway speeds, and for long distances too... i took it from phx to roosey, and the ride up is nice, but the ride back down is usually scary, i had no problem in the jeep. the only issue was getting the boat out of the water, and then all i did was put it in 4 high and it did great...

of course i didnt feel very manly using the wifes jeep to tow my boat, but it worked great.

o, one thing that did suck about the jeep apposed to the truck, is that damn spare tire blocking the view of the trailer... couldnt see too well to back it up...

thats all.

Re: Jeep Liberty 2006 V6

I have been towing our 3500lbs boat for nearly two years with our Jeep Renegade 4x4 with Command Trac and have had no handeling issues when towing from Cincy to Lake Cumberland (about 200 highway miles). I have a 2004 and it does better on hills than our Grand Cherokee (6000 lbs tow cap). But like Zuke said, the spare is annoying.
