I figure you are the expert to ask.
What is the proper way to write numbers in a semi- legal document. Judges, defense attorneys, DA's will read it but I am no lawyer. Such as (fifteen hundred) or $1500.00. I have heard up to the number 21 you should write it out the long way.
Thanks a bunch.
Dman

Re: JB--writing question

Hi Dman. I write contracts at work and we use both methods simultaneously, so $1434.45 is written as $1434.45(fourteen hundred thirty four dollars and 45 cents). Hope this helps.

That's what I have been doing for now. It covers both methods, but is there a correct gramatical way of doing it? College english didn't cover it or I was not paying attention!
D

Re: JB--writing question

Dman-
Most attorneys that need to include an amount in a legal document, will write the numbers as follows:

One thousand five hundred dollars ($1500.00)
or
One thousand four hundred thirty four dollars and 45/100 ($1434.45)

Its not "critical" but most follow the above form. Write the numbers out in words first, followed by the numerical representation in ( ). That is the accepted form to use in legal documents. BTW, Wife and brother are attorneys so I didnt make this up. ;)
Hope that helps :D

Hi, DMan.

If there is a rule, I don't know of it, except never begin a sentence with a digit, always write it out.

I would continue what you are doing on the theory that a check is a legal document and both versions are required there.

Good luck. :)

Re: JB--writing question

Every major profession has an accepted writing style or standard format. Scientists follow after one and lawyers another. Find out which literary format the lawyers follow after and get a book on it if you do a lot of structured writing. It's been a long time or I could give you some examples and names of these writing styles. These books show you how to format reports, annotated bibliographies, and other documents native to the particular profession.

- bayman

Beaux
I think your right, a very smart crew here on the forum. Is it the light or the lens that makes the port running light green?

Ok GF, if a plane crashes in the border of Louisiana and Texas, where do you bury the survivors?

GF, a stick of course. Here's one, it starts snowing at a constant rate, at 12 noon a plow driver starts plowing at a constant rate, at the end of the first hour he plowed 2 miles of road, at the end of the second hour he only managed one more mile: Question, what time did the snow start falling? Believe it or not there is enough information to solve the problem using linear regression.

A horse started walking at sunup and walked all day stopping at sunset. When the horse stopped two of its legs had travelled 20 miles and the other two legs travelled 22 miles. How can this be?

I have been glued to the TV since this morning's tragedy and just got online. I love this "stump the chump" stuff. First good thoughts of laughter all morning. :D

GF, gotta say the horse walked in a big circle.

If you are walking across a field, and find yourself between a calf and a mother bull, which direction should you run. (this is weak, can't remember the way I originally heard it. Need help.)
