Don't know if it was a good idea or not. But just bought a 93 Jazz at auction that needs some work and it looked like it could be a fun winter project. Does anyone here have any suggestions on where ot get AM parts for these? Most specifically need the steering cable and control cable for the diverter. Any ideas on other areas would be appreciated; upgrading the seating/padding, etc, etc. Oh, and manuals. I found a service manual on eBay, and a parts list and a useless "owners manual" from Bayliner.com, but I know nothing about 2 strokes/jet-drives being an "I/O Guy" and I'd like to work on it/run it out of the water and don't want to blow it up or anything. Thanks!

the power head is a force outboard engine so you may be able to match up some cables that way

I have all the SJ manuals as PDF's if you didn't buy the one on ebay. Guys I see selling cd's are just burning these manuals to cd and selling.

Read through posts here on running sportjets in driveway, the manual is lacking in that area. Tricky business, the city water supply is much more pressure than sj's pump pushes through cooling system so you need to just crack valve a bit.

SJ's have a cavity where exhaust gases, unspent fuel will collect if hose isn't on and engine doesn't start up right off-cavity is filled with water on the lake. Many people have blown ride plate right off their boat attempting to start engine in driveway without water on....crack it a little, when engine starts you can then open water more as exhaust will keep water from hydro locking engine.

You can pick up 2 brass pipe fittings to connect garden hose to blk hose that passes around rear of engine....disconnect that hose from floor right angle fitting. Those fittings are $5 total at Home depot, Mercs fitting is $35 + shipping.

Thanks for the replies. The maual that I got from eBay is what looks to be a Mercruiser service book. Hopefully it will have some of the operation instructions for running the boat on the trailer. As far as the black hose that you're talking about, do you mean the one in the spring-clamp behind the engine cowl? I haven't hooked anything to it yet since I'm waiting on a starter to arrive to get the engine running, but I was assuming that that is the hose for running fresh water through the engine while running it out of the water. Or is that one just for back-flushing the engine after use? There is something similar on the back of my Four Winns Vista, but it's only for flushing the engine without it running. In fact, it's specifically for that purpose and to run the engine that way without muffs on the outdrive can cause damage.

That's exactly the kind of information that I'm trying to get in a manual. I'd rather look before I leap since about the only thing that I know for sure about SJs is that they're real different than I/Os and to mess with them without knowing what you're doing can get really expensive really quick. If you have any PDFs on anything useful it would be greatly appreciated. The only things that I have accumulated right now are the Bayliner Jazz parts list and an owner's manual addendum both of which are somewhat useless and the Mercruiser shop manual which hopefully will be a lot more useful.

The other two things that I really need right now are the steering cable and the diverter cable, the throttle cable is intact. The steering and diverter cables were removed, but never replaced on the boat by the previous owner. And the Boat/trailer were bought at auction.

Thanks again for the info.

I'll pm you a link to manual-I put it on a file sharing site. Its the merc shop manual, lacks instructions for running engine off garden hose.

If your behind engine, facing it there is a black hose connected to a brass right angle fitting at base of the engine...at rear on your right. That hose travels across back of engine going up on your left. No mistaking it, not sure about spring clamps.....the only spring clamp I've seen is on the large 3-4" exhaust boot? See this thread for some details on running on trailer, etc:

I don't know name of pipe fittings, you need garden hose thread female, connect that to pipe thread straight fitting that connect to your black hose.

Cool thanks for the help. I'll try to get some pics up re: the black hose across the back of the cowl.

Yep, that's it....disconnect the black hose from the floor fitting and you can hook garden hose to it to supply cooling water.

It is possible the other hose hooks to the cooling system also, its been added so you'll need to check where it connects to. Seen more than one SJ hooked up to allow easy hose intall.

On the cables,;once you remove them you will see a manufacturer and number stamped on the cable- will be either teleflex or morse. You can get a replacement at a marine dealer or online.
As far as the seats, what I did was order a sheet of closed cell foam from hydroturf in the color of your cost and cut to fit. That boat doesnt really have upholstered seats- total cost of the mat is only $50.00.
Good luck.

Re: Jazz Parts Resources

Thanks for the info guys. Thankfully the throttle/diverter cable ended up being intact, unfortunately the steering cable was completely removed so I guess I'll have to call teleflex and see what they can do.

The foam for the seats is something I'll have to look into also.

While I'm here, what's the general consensus on the 175 hp Jazz boats? While looking for SJ 90 stuff I came across a 96 Jazz 175 with trailer @ $900. It looks a bit bigger with more seating. Supposedly it has a bad flywheel and needs seat cover replacement. I was thinking maybe selling/parting out the Jazz 90 and picking up the 175. I've heard these little 90s really like to suck down the fuel and I'm guessing the 175 is probably even worse.

Re: Jazz Parts Resources

I wish there were deals like that in my neighborhood. I'd definitely repower with a 175. I hear they can get the boat to 60mph. Sure a jet is going to use more fuel than an outboard due to their inefficiency.
