James, Your post on squirrel hunting has been fun. But, I was out muzzleloader hunting yesterday (in PA this is our flintlock only season) and was memorized by 2 playful squirrels. Your post had me thinking that maybe I could get one of these tree rats with the muzzleloader.

While I was thinking about it and watching the antics of these 2 squirrels, and noise was heard to my right. There, 20 yards away, stood a nice big doe. I have no idea how it got there, undetected, but it did. I was exposed, and the muzzleloader was leaning against the tree 5 feet away! All because of the squirrels!

To make a long story short, I did recover the muzzlelaoder, made the shot as the deer was quartering away at 35 yards, and bagged the deer. But, I almost didn't because of JamesCoste and his squirrel hunting posts!

Now those squirrels will remember you next time you're out. Be leary, as they may arm themselves. :)

Make sure your mind is engaged before you put your fingers in gear. (paraphrased). ;)

You are right about that, and they were looking right at me! The 50 cal went straight through the deer, imagine the mess it would have made of the squirrel at 15 yards, if in fact I could have hit it!

Sorry about that Aspeck! I'm glad you got your doe anyhow. I went hunting this morning with my Brother in law and my son. I put my son and BIL in the tree where we saw the buck the previous weekend.

I marched off (in the dark) about 150 yards away and sat down and leaned against the base of a large oak tree. We all had shotguns and slugs. These woods are thick and you won't (shouldn't) take a shot over 60 yards or so. I had 4 does and 2 bucks come within 30 yards from me. Unfortunately, it was still pretty dark and I couldn't quite make out the bucks from the does. I had taken off my glasses for a minute because they were fogging up due to my breath going up my facemast. That didn't help matters. They would come into view, then slowly walk back into the thick. They were staring straight at me but I wouldn't move a muscle. If I drew my gun, they would have spooked. Eventually they got brave enough to pass by where I was sitting and they went toward my son and BIL. I waited about 2 hours; however, they never saw the deer.

Another day maybe. We went ahead and shot a couple squirrels before heading home. What an adrenaline rush!
