I have a 15' 6" tidecraft its a 1994 model. its got a 2001 merc 90 horse on it. The motor sits a little low in the water and i have alot of trouble getting it to take off. My question is i want to put a jack plate. Ive seen people say its too small of a boat or itll throw the balance off. I need to know what size jackplate i should put and if itll be safe

Re: jack plate question

What? You can put a jackplate on her. On smaller boats, you just need a smaller jackplate. If she sets back another 4-6", that's fine. It won't throw it off balance. If you trim the engine out too far, it will porpoise or chine walk, but that's only if you trim it too far out.

With a jackplate, there is a greater range of things the operator can do to screw up: Too much trim or raising motor too high at speed and losing traction in turns or losing cooling water.

So, the jackplate increases the number of things you, the operator, can do wrong and it increases the severity of your errors. But just having the jackplate (and the modest setback it offers) doesn't do anything to hurt your boat. You'll get more speed and better mileage, that's for sure.

Two companies that make them for all size boats AND will talk to you over the phone and tell you what you do or don't want are Bob's machine shop and hydrodynamics. Google 'em and call em.

Do you have the correct prop for your boat? I can't believe you're having a problem "taking off" with a 90 hp on a 15' boat. What's the transom measurement and is your OB long or short shafted? What size prop do you have?

Re: jack plate question

its a long shaft motor on a short boat and if im trimmed all the way down the exhaust relief is under water and it struggles taking off if i stop and trim it up about half way then i can take off perfect... i have the motor mounted in the highest holes on the motor leg bracket so i figure a jack plate is the only answer
