has anyone installed a jack plate and noticed any gains or problems.

im thinking it changes the cog of the boat

im also thinking it might increase drag at low speed. no idea if water is designed to flow around a boat transon like air and moving the motor 6" backwards would mess with the design and the jack plates are not curve almost like a funnel for catching water inbetween the motor and the transom.

Re: jack plate pros and cons

I dont see the downside to a jack.....ok maybe ...if i squint real hard

#1 downside...about $700-$1200
#2 down side....leaverge the weight of the motor off the trasom...+ more forces on the transom
#3 makes the stern sit just a tad deeper because of the leverage of the motors weight

ok done with down sides

upsides

#1 looks kool and people think you know what you are doing
#2 versatility...when going slow you can raise that motor so the prop is just barely in the water...thus you can motor is MUCH shallower water...at least going slow you can

#3 lets you tune your motor on a whim...for any weight distribution changes you may have in a boat on any given day

you are all wrong about the drag....the jack probably isnt in the water..and certainly wont cause any drag....since it lets you take 4-5" of lower unit out of the water...it has to DECREASE your drag!!

while on plane it lets you raise the motor for optimum speed and the least drag....

you can go back and forth...because it is dynamic..

when it really rough, you can drive the motor all the ay down....and when its calm and you want to get into the shallows...you can raise the motor and drive through the shallows you could never run in before...also letting you get more speed in some shallows you used to be able to go in...but could only run them slow...because you have the motor trimmed so far up. Thus not letting you give it much throttle...because it would only drive you right back down with all the trim.

with the motor just raised vertically you can run those shallows with out driving the stern down!
