J60TLETD - dying at low throttle

I have a J60TLETD, idles fine, runs fine, the problem is when put in forward gear, at the slowest forward speed possible, the motor will die after a minute or two of 'no wake' speed. if i give it a little bit of gas and move a bit faster, it does not die. my question is what's causing the motor to die out when i've engaged the forward throttle, but keeping it in gear at the slowest speed possible?

I have replaced the fuel line/ bulb primer with OMC brand. Fuel filter is new, gas is not old. Could this be a fuel pump problem? or possibly time to rebuild carbs? haven't rebuilt carbs before, but i do have the manual.

just need some direction on what to look for or check next?

thanks in advance.

a quick add on question: should i just adjust the idle speed screw and forget worrying about diagnosing the problem?

NCornett, do you have a tach on this motor? if so, what RPM's are you idleing at in gear? Too low an RPM in gear will cause that problem, it should be between 750 and 850 in gear at an idle. If it is idleing that fast and you are having a problem, I would suspect that you have a clogged idle circuit in one of the carbs. If you are idling at a speed lower than that, adjust your idle speed to that RPM and see if that fixes your problem. Report back what happens, and the real experts will be able to get you back up and running again
