Is there any difference between Champion J4C Plugs and JC4 plugs?

Re: J4c vs jc4

J4C is a plug commonly used in older outboards. Never heard of a JC4....are you sure you have the correct number?
There are a few plugs that have "JC4" as a suffix...e.g. QL77JC4.

Just stick with the recommended plug for your application and you'll be fine. :)

Tim,

You are correct. I was handed a QL77JC4 and was told that "this is the same as a J4C Plug". Sounded fishy so I wanted to confirm if that was true or not.

In addition, do you guys find the plugs for older models available in stores or only online. I am having trouble finding them locally.

Not the same thing. The "L" means its a long plug, so it's good you didn't use it, or your pistons might have hit them. Most chain auto stores (O'Rielley, Advanced Auto parts, etc...) have had Champion J4C and/or J6C plugs, but you may also want to ask around at some local small motor shops. Well worth the effort to get the right plugs. You can even order them here from iboats if need be.

So, what motor are we talking about here?
J4C replaces J4J, which was used in a lot of 50s and 60s OMC outboards....and doubtless many others.

Post your make and model and we can confirm what is the currently recommended plug for it.

Tim, I have a 1964 40 hp johnson Super Sea Horse RDSL26S, which I thought used to have J4J but now needs J4C. Correct?

You may also consider J6C plugs, if you do lots of trolling. They burn a little hotter, which can help prevent fouling at low speeds. Points should be gapped to .020" and spark plugs to .030".
