I have a 1996 larson lxi 194. The engine is a volvo penta 5.0 FL I believe. Sorry i just recently purchased the boat. The raw water pump was leaking so I bought a brand new one (part # 3858847). I installed the pump and thought everything was great after the first outing. Upon the second day out i noticed water in the hull which should not have been there. Suspecting a leak of some sort i started the boat and noticed a constant drip coming from behind the plastic piece around the shaft of the pulley. When i increase the rpm's obviously the water flow increases. I had done my research on this site before I bought this pump because thats what the last one was doing. I know you cant rebuild it, but just buy another one. Just wanting to double check that I wasnt suppose to remove that plastic piece or something. No directions with it, seemed preety straight forward, even if there were i dont think I would have read them. Thanks for all your help. Brian

Brand new parts break all the time, take it back and get it replaced.

Guess I will, but just didnt want to look like a fool if I did something wrong or didn't do something. BTW Don, I bow down to you because you are the King in this forum and very knowledgable. Could I have somehow bent the shaft the pulley is pressed on to overtightening the belt. Its is snug but i dont think its any tighter than any other belt ive installed on other motors. thanks

You don't have to have those belts super tight, like an alternator. 1/2" flex in the belt when tight would be plenty

Re: Its brand new, is this possible

Thanks Don. One last question. The local marinas dont have the pump in stock but when i bought this one a couple of the marinas tried to sell me a different pump. It was the same pump with same inlet outlet diameters but with a 4 inch pulley ( part #3857794). The one on there now is a 6 inch pulley and was about 100 more. Will it hurt anything if I install the one with the 4 inch pulley and a little smaller belt. And because kids are bugging me to go out and I cant get the actual pump until next week. Thanks again
