It takes a sleeze to catch a sleeze...

For the last week or so I was getting strange phone calls from people who wanted my birthdate, current address, etc. They would only identify themselves by a first name, did not say what company they worked for, and they sounded just like phone scammers. They kept telling me that they had a Chase card in my name. But would not mail it, needed to verify I was the proper owner, etc. After the third call (and they were asking for me by name) I just started hanging up, or let the answering machine take the call. Desperate messages about "time sensative matter" and "urgently request you call me back..." type stuff.

I started to worry, figured it's not a bank, or legit card offer because no bank name is given, etc.

So I googled the number that showed up on the Caller ID. Turns out the calls were comming from a COLLECTION agency.

I got worried that maybe I had my identity stolen and people were taking out credit cards in my name, etc. So I did a free credit report online. I came out clean with nothing odd on my report.

So now knowing who they are, and my credit is secure, I called these folks and confronted them. Got some rep on the phone, told him to pay attention very carefully, gave him my phone number and name and told him to call me back because I want to know why they are harrassing me and it will be on their dime, not mine.

He gave me some smart *** reply and hung up. Five minutes later he calls. I figure it took him that long to pull up my file on his system. I asked why they are calling. He asked me if I was "Mark Mueller" I said no, it's close, but not my name. He asked if I lived in Asbury Park, NJ. I told him no. I also told him that if he had my phone number he knew my real name and my real address so why are you calling me? Some guy in Asbury Park named Mark Mueller has a deliquent Chase credit card. Somehow my phone number got associated with him or vice versa. I told him all the info he has is all he will get from me. No I will not give my SSN, my birthdate, or any other info.

He said it was an obvious mistake and will remove me from the file.

We will see what happens in the next few days.

My only mistake was not writing down this guys name for reference if I get any more calls. Man, oh man, these people sound like sleezy scammers on the phone. You would think they would do better with a more professional approach. Maybe not. Maybe it takes a sleeze to catch a sleeze.

PS, I realize that not all people who are in collections are sleeze. But a lot of them are!

Good thing you caught these sleeze bags! Who does it take to catch a sleeze? :D

Seriously, I don't understand why it is ok for them to lie and harrass people. The ends do not justify the means.

I think we ought to dress up bill collectors as bums and let people in Washington state throw cans at them!

I have the same thing going on here. We got a new phone number when we moved into our new house...problem is, the previous owner of the phone number was a deadbeat. We are constantly getting automated callers from law firms calling early morning and mid evening. They do not state their reason, just simply to call them back. After about 6 calls from the same firm, I called them and told them to take me off their automated call list. They started getting me angry because they didn't believe that I WASN'T the person they were after. Finally they said they'd remove my number.
All was quiet for 3 days then this morning at 6:00am, I get another call from their automated system.
Anyone have any clues as to how to make them stop? I've tried to block their number, but their automated caller program uses multiple phone lines.

I've talked to the phone company and they were little help.

My first impulse was to give their phone number to every viagra spam Email on the net, sign up for any free offer and tell them to contact me at their number. Maybe they would like a dose of their own medicine.

Nav

I get calls all the time for someone who has a near identical name to mine. He owes child support, law enforcement was looking for him. A couple of his jobs even ended up on my credit report. Even scarier, he banks at my bank as well. I have to micromanage my bank account to make sure a teller doesn't get us mixed up. It happened once, a new girl deposited my money into his account, even though my picture is right there on my account. I immediatly caught it when she gave me the slip and the account number and balance was wrong. He is one of those paycheck to paycheck types who burns his money and has a near zero balance, I alway have at least 2-3 grand in my checking at any given moment. Scary stuff...

Radio Shack sells a device that you attach to your phone line that is supposed to eliminate autodialer calls. Maybe that is the answer.

Are you on the do not call list? If so, turn them in and see what happens.

Mark,

I see that you are in Florida. I had the same problem with a collection law firm that was looking for a person that I had never heard of. When they would call I would tell them that there was no person by that name here. The calls didn't stop after telling them every time to not call here again. Then the automated calls started. I finally called the police. They sent an officer over and he got the phone number, took out his cell phone and called them and told them that it was against Florida law to call any further after I told them not to call again. He told them to take my number out of their database and their automated calling system. Never got another call from them.

If a debt is owed collectors can call to collect but only between certain hours.

Problem is collection agencies use minimum wage help, some with real power issues.

No, they pretty much ALL are. Even the people that work for them are there because they can't get a real job elsewhere.

Most of these companies are run or owned by lawyers. And you know what they say about 1,000 lawyer at the bottom of the sea... a good start!

My nuber is on the Do not Call registry.
When I called them the first time, they said that since they are not selling or soliciting anything, it does not apply to them. Their auto dialer recorded message is like phone spam with no way to "opt out".

Makes you want to reach out and slap them for their arrogance

Nav

Scary is right! Why don't you change banks? It would seem to me that the inconvenience of setting up new accounts is more than offset by the knowledge that the bank will not be making mistakes anymore. Plus it is just a good idea to change banks and/or account numbers every year just for security against identity/credit theft.

good reason to simply get rid of your home phone. wife and i both have cell phones, haven't had a land line in 3 years. so much nicer and saves a few bucks.
