Read how not having the hydraulic brakes work on my dual axle trailer for my 20 foot boat -- I took it into the brake place and had them repaired.

New master cilindar - new everything else including steel lines.

Total out the door $964.70

Wish I had switched them to electric - but had no idea it would cost so much to fix the hydraulics.

I am replacing my drum brakes with stainless discs I bought from Northern Tool for $ 120 per wheel. They are direct replacements for 3500 lb capacity axles, and only take a few mins. to do, best of all they are made by Tie Down Engineering in good old Atlanta Ga. that's USA, HOORAY for America.

WOW! That would have made a nice down payment on a new trailer.

Holy cow!

I'm betting you'll learn how to do it yourself next time?

I try to do everything myself, except when it comes to needing special tooling... Even then I weigh the difference in buying my own tools vs. having a shop do it.

H.

You're going to have a hard time finding electric brakes for a boat trailer and you need a controller in the tow vehicle. And you still need to maintain the brakes, electric or not.

I do this also if it's something I know or can learn. Of course, you need the time, tools and equipment, and a place to do the work. In some cases, paying for the time, skill, and experience of the technician or mechanic is worth the money.

Be sure and post back with the actual time spent including jacking the trailer and bleeding and testing afterwards. And the time spent getting the old, rusted parts off! ;)

I am in the process of refurbing my trailer brakes. After all said and done, will have $350 in parts, including All new master cylinder/hitch, brake line, bearings, races, seals, bearing buddies, brakes/backer plates. Reusing the Drums and hubs. I'll have the peace of mind knowing everything is new and I saved a bundle based upon what John spent.

BTW... Tommays... the new backer plates/brakes from Atwood... "made in Taiwan"

Ya know what doesn't make sense is, to buy new brake shoes, spring kit and wheel cylinder was going to cost double the price of buying the complete backer plate kit already assembled.
