Issues filling your boat with gas?

I was one of the many that was continually frustrated when it came time to fill up my boat at the marina. Slow Slow Slow with almost a 100% chance of gas being puked back out at me and onto my boat (grrrr). So, I read everything I could get my hands on from iBoats relative to this issue.

I pulled and replaced the vent hose, fuel lines, inspected the NPT fittings on top of the tank for blockage and installed a water/fuel separator. The old vent line did have a good amount extra length to it that wasn't really needed - so I shortened it about a foot and a half. Additionally, I installed the Racor Lifeguard 3-Stage Fuel / Air Separator and this device works.

Yesterday, after all the effort, i pulled up to the marina pump with fingers crossed to fill up... I was able to fill it up with not a drop being puked back and was able to pump gas into the boat quite fast. So, for those out there experiencing this issue dont resign yourself to it, in most cases it can be solved.

Thanks to all the folks on this form that continually post a path to resolving such issues. I am so relieved that I no longer have to be that guy holding people up while I pump a tea spoon at a time into my boat! Speaking of which, its time to hit the river!

Enjoy.

Ayuh,.... Please tell me ya didn't take the upward loop outa yer vent line,..??....

The Upward Loop, allows water to enter, then be expelled, rather than the water runnin' Into the fuel tank...

Vents, Always see splash, some worse than others...

I put a Whistle in my vent line, when it whistles, it's fillin', 'n when it Stops,... Let go the trigger, No spills...

No Sir... Left in the loop. It just had a good deal extra hose that was not really needed.

EVERY boat I have owned as had this problem. My last boat was a 37,000.00 Ranger and it always puked gas. I just thought all boats did it and waited for it to happen...... with rags in hand to clean up the gas when it came spewing out. That whistle sounds great!

I never get the tank full because the pump shuts off because I have the reached the maxim $ amount set by the station. :D

While my installation was a fuel/air separator (non whistle). Installation of any of these devices is simple... Cut the line insert into hose on each end, clamp and your done. Google "Fuel Whistle" should find what your looking for.

That should read "vent line". And it works great, but sure gets the strange looks from those who don't have a clue. LOL.

I put a vent whistle in my first boat (21' Pro-Line). They do work, and they're fine if you have a smallish tank. But they're loud and annoying- In the time it takes to put 80 gallons into the boat, you'll want to shoot yourself (and so will everybody else at the fuel dock).

Nuts...
I shortened my vent and fill lines, but I don't recall seeing any "upward loop".
If you would be so kind to explain?

(Or, shall I start a new thread...don't want to hijack)

If your vent line goes through the boat hull to vent outside then you need that loop, it is just a circle in the hose. I gives a place for a small amount of water to get trapped and not go to the tank and will be pushed out when filling with gas. My current boat has the vent line connected to the fill tube, similar to your car or truck and no loop in it since it is all sealed by the fuel cap.
