Issue setting the timing.

I recently decided to do a full tune up on my 1987 Searay Seville (3.0l 181cid) while it was down with a shredded prop. I replaced the points, condenser, rotor, plugs, and distributor cap. With all these parts replaced and the point gap set, I decided I should set the timing. With the engine running at the proper RPM's and the timing light on wire #1, the timing doesnt seem to be consistent. I have it set at the proper timing mark, but the mark on the flywheel isn't always there when the timing light flashes. It will be right on the spot for a couple second and then the mark will disappear completely for a few flashes. Is this a sign of bad spark in the cylinders? Sorry I'm kind of new to doing timing......

It may mean you have bad plug wires, or the timing light doesn't like where it's hooked up.
Move the timing light pickup away from other wires (like near #1 spark plug) and try it.

Thanks Don. I tried moving the timing like pickup to several different locations and it didn't seem to help. I will pick up some new plug wires and see if that helps.

Connect the timing light pick-up the the number 4 plug wire and see if it makes a difference.
