Re: Islander with a Seadrive?

I don't guess you worked out the problem:
[h=1]1984 Islander with140 3 liter mercruiser yet again. When will I get it?[/h]
And rather then changing to a SeaDrive or changing to a bracket:
[h=3]Adding a bracket to a 1984 19 foot Islander.[/h]
Why not go 6cyl Mercruiser?

Your Islander already has the right keyhole in the hull, 'only' the motor mounts would need to be changed and NO re-engineering the transom to support an OB bracket or a SeaDrive.

Just wondering..............

Why would you want a sea drive when you don't have sails? The main feature of a sea drive was reduced drag when on sail.

At this point the engine is completely rebuilt, the transom has been replaced, the flotation foam has been redone and the side and floorboards are replaced. All that is left is a paint job on the hull. I did work out the problems, but in the end I still feel overwhelmed by this boat, so I am just looking for some changes to make it more of what I'm comfortable with. Besides, much as I hate to admit it, I love puttering around with stuff even when i don't understand it.

IMO, the SeaDrive is not a move in the right direction, even as a learning exercise.

Going the other way, PULLING a SeaDrive, in favor of a bracket, sure, that might make sense.

Sea Drive - sort of a bracket mount.

Sail Drive - thru hull mounted and business end.

Whoops, I've got to read more carefully!:facepalm:

But where's the fun then? :lol: I figured that's what happened

rolmops - From what I understand, a Sea Drive is like a WLOD: old, obsolete and difficult to find parts. You may feel more overwhelmed trying to find parts for a Sea Drive. Or even a good one to start with.

Yep,

If doing a rebuild anyways get rid of the obsolete stuff, if its already cut for the Mercruiser thats what needs to go in.

Most of a SeaDrive is just a standard Johnson/Evinrude V4 or V6. Parts shouldn't be tough to find. The only issue would be parts for the bracket and probably the tilt 'n trim. I doubt there'd be a read frequent need for parts for those. I wouldn't seek out a SeaDrive but I don't know that it'd be a deal breaker for me.
