And so the saga continues.
This time it was the gimbal bearing, but this really feels like wrapping up odds and ends.
After another trial run I decided that she really is a bit too noisy, so down came the outdrive yet again and I finger tested the gimbal bearing only to find out that it was really loose.
So another one with the oil seal was bought and I studied the picture of the $250 special tool that is needed to pull the bearing out.
My wife gently suggested that these 250 dollars should be used for other things and she murmured something about divorce if I spent another penny on that @%^$@@!!#$%$ boat.
This forced me to be creative and I realized that all that was needed was a strong threaded rod with some washers and bolts.
I inserted the rod into the gimbal bearing and climbed into the boat where I put some big strong washers on the rod and a big nut on the end.
Next I took the removable hitch off the back of the van and slit the outside end of the rod through the pin hole and there was the metal stop for the outside. All that was left to do was putting a few washers on the rod and another nut. The nut was tightened and the gimbal bearing came sliding out as if I had used the $250 tool.
I proudly told my wife how my improvisational talents had saved us all those dollars. Now she plans to spend that money on new shoes.I mentioned something about 20 other pairs of shoes in the closet, but I will be paying dearly for that comment.
Anyway, the bearing is out and all that is left to do is figuring out a way to force the new one in and how to get the oil seal out
