Islander with a Mercruiser 140 + question about how to remove the oil seal

And so the saga continues.
This time it was the gimbal bearing, but this really feels like wrapping up odds and ends.
After another trial run I decided that she really is a bit too noisy, so down came the outdrive yet again and I finger tested the gimbal bearing only to find out that it was really loose.
So another one with the oil seal was bought and I studied the picture of the $250 special tool that is needed to pull the bearing out.
My wife gently suggested that these 250 dollars should be used for other things and she murmured something about divorce if I spent another penny on that @%^$@@!!#$%$ boat.
This forced me to be creative and I realized that all that was needed was a strong threaded rod with some washers and bolts.
I inserted the rod into the gimbal bearing and climbed into the boat where I put some big strong washers on the rod and a big nut on the end.
Next I took the removable hitch off the back of the van and slit the outside end of the rod through the pin hole and there was the metal stop for the outside. All that was left to do was putting a few washers on the rod and another nut. The nut was tightened and the gimbal bearing came sliding out as if I had used the $250 tool.
I proudly told my wife how my improvisational talents had saved us all those dollars. Now she plans to spend that money on new shoes.I mentioned something about 20 other pairs of shoes in the closet, but I will be paying dearly for that comment.
Anyway, the bearing is out and all that is left to do is figuring out a way to force the new one in and how to get the oil seal out

Enjoyed your story, do use caution when installing the new gimbal bearing and be sure you are installing it correctly or you will be doing it again. I hope you have a service manual..., if not perhaps one of the good folks on here can give you the info for the download, it has been a lifesaver for me. I have it on my thumb drive and just pull up the page(s) that I need and only print those. I am putting together a notebook of all the printed material so someday i will have all the necessary info in print. I have read a few nasty stories on non-properly installed gimbal bearings.

Re: Islander with a Mercruiser 140 and replacing the oil seal

I do have a factory manual for the engine and a Seloc for the out drive so I am fairly well covered on the manual end.
Forcing a new bearing in is very easy with a piece of 3 inch PVC and a 12 pound sledge hammer. But there is one task left to do before doing that. The oil seal needs to be removed and replaced. Is it correct to assume that the seal goes in and out from the engine end? I would hate to spend my energy on trying to force it out in the wrong direction.
Thanks again for the patient help that I have been receiving from you guys.

do you mean the grease seal? serviced from the rear.

if there was oil in your bellows, your upper gearcase driveshaft seal on your outdrive is leaking.

I mean the grease seal. When you say serviced from the rear,do you mean that it goes in and out just like the gimbal bearing or that it goes in and out on the side of the engine?

Unfortunately you are not covered as far as a manual for the drive. Get a real one online here free... just sayin'. (Seloc is not worth the paper it is printed on, except if you need something to kneel on in the shop.)

engine removal is not required to normally service the gimbal bearing and grease seal
all work usually done standing behind the transom

Ayuh,.... The seal yer talkin' 'bout don't do a 'ell of alot,...

Seein's ya already got the gimbel bearing in,.... Don't worry 'bout it....

All it ever does is to let the purged gimbel bearing grease move aft into the bellows, rather than forward into the motorbox...

If ya keep the boat long enough to wear out the new gimbel bearing,...
You can replace that seal, the Next time yer in there....

No way, I'd pull a new bearing to put that seal in.... it don't do nothin'....

Thank you Bondo!
You just said what I hoped might be the thing to do.
