I have a 89 bayliner with a L-drive 85 hp engine<br />I'm trying to test the engine in my driveway, I have placed the rabbit ears on the inlets on the lower unit but when I turn on the water it does not seem to come out anywhere except from around the rabbit ears. Both when the engine is idling or off, have only run it for a couple of seconds. Does the prop need to turn for water intake or does the water pump work off the engine...Sorry for the stupid questions...but better be safe than sorry. ;)

The prop does not have to be turning for the pump to be working, and if you ran it for only a couple seconds I would think that it had no time to warm up, I would believe you have a thermastat and it would have to open before water would come out. I do not know anything about the L drive but that would be my best guess, Good luck and happy boating

If the L-Drive is anything like the OB, it will require back pressure (from lake water) before any water will come out the exhaust. The thermostat is still working though.
