Is water leaking normal..after rebuild?

I just put together my 60 hp johnson, new pistons, etc. I ran it and had no exterior leaks on the engine at all. When i shut it off i noticed the mid section was draining a lot of water out the front side, mating with the lower unit, i've never noticed that before. I pulled the lower unit, mid section and adapter back off and ran water throgh motor with an adapter, i had no water coming out the exhaust, so i figure the cooling around engine is leak proof, also checked water pump line with water pressure and didn't have any leaks there either. Is this normal to have the water circulating through motor and out through the mid section during idle? (See pics below on new post)

I had the lower unit off and then hooked up a hose to the water pump line. It got a little wet but i did mange to see the water coming from the top of the mid section. when i checked the motor (circulated water through cooling water intake port) the water came out the hole that sits next to thermostat in the head. This is what i saw leaking when looking up the mid section. When the base motor, adapter and mid section are all put back together, there is nothing to stop it from flowing through and down to the top of lower unit and drain out. My lower unit does not have a gasket (metal to metal). At this point I'm thinking it is normal but not quite sure.

It's normal on my 9.9, if that helps at all.

This port can be followed back through water jacket, and then it runs into the pressure relief/poppet valve. There is a half moon opening on the relief/poppet valve so some water has to come through. Does anybody know exactly when it relieves pressure and or how much will come out? Maybe a bad water jacket cover gasket?

Re: Is water leaking normal..after rebuild?

Here are some pics of what i am talking about. Pic 1 is where the water is leaking (pencil points hole) The second pic is where the water from pic 1 leaks down into (the "L" shaped area) Pic 3 shows the water jacket cover and head (old parts) this is spark plug side (pencil shows same port leaking) Pic 4 is the old head as it joins to crank case. I realize that one of the seals may not have taken and water might be leaking through, but i don't want to rip it apart again just to find out is normal. Thanks

I don't really see anything in the pics that looks out of the ordinary. My 9.9 lets water out just above the lower unit after I shut it down, & I just rebuilt it too. If it's not runnin hot & there isn't any water in the cylinders (or on the plugs) you're probably fine. I'm guessin that maybe they do that to cool the exhaust tube a bit during operation, but I'm certainly no expert on that motor so, maybe someone else can confirm this or debunk it. I certainly wouldn't tear it back down just yet.:)

Thanks Scanman, yeah i will just wait someone should know. I would think someone would at least have a cooling system operation reference for a 1985 60 HP johnson. I talked to a couple of dealers, and they don't seem to know either. Even offered to pay someone to come and look at it, he said no. He's only about 7 miles away.
