Is this transom crack a problem?

I am new to boating and am currently looking at a Cape Craft 18' CC, however, I saw a crack on the transom and was curious if the group believes this would be a major problem or repairable with caulk and/or putty.

Thanks in advance to any replies.

My first thought is that it would make me nervous. The crack is right at the transom cap which would expose the edges of the wood core to water. Water will be more readily absorbed at the edges of any of the wood which will lead to rot, which will lead to expensive repairs. I would have a conversation with the dealer about it. Maybe someone here with more expertise can give a more definitive answer, but it certainly can't stay like that and to fix it right will probably require much more than caulk or putty.

Thanks for the quick response...

That's the motor just to the right in the picture. Isn't the transom the part of the boat the motor is attached too? The following picture shows the right side of the engine where no crack is present. The close up form the original picture is the left side of the engine.

yes that is the joint between the splash well and the transom.... that is what I would call a separation and not a crack... the gap is not the issue.... yes it could be easily "fixed" with caulk but the real issue is WHY is it separated? .... That can only be determined hands on...

Re: Is this transom crack a problem?

What we're saying is that the separation is in a "cap" that fits over the top of the transom proper. The big question is whether or not the wood core in the transom is exposed under this cap, or is it purely decorative, and the fiberglass covering the wood core is continuous under this cap (covers/wraps/protects the wood core by lapping over the top of the core). If the wood is exposed, water could have been getting under there every time the boat is used, or it rains- if it's not covered whenever not in use. Wood rotting in the transom and lower hull stringers/floors/frames is the #1 or #2 (engines might be #1) problem with boats older than 5 years or so. So this boat at 7 years old is suspect. Wood problems are not as easily detected as engine problems are, at least if you give the boat a sea trial. You can get a very rough idea by rapping on the transom just below the crack with a small hammer, then again on the other side- do they sound the same? Can you pry up on the cap enough to shine a light in and see if you see wood or continuous fiberglass under the cap? You should also make sure the floors are solid as well. Any soft spots are usually indicative of rot, which can be fixed, but its a long, dirty process if you do it yourself, and expensive if you have a shipwright do it.

Yes, It is a problem.

Don't buy it or tell them to replace the transom. Cauk will not fix that.

Thanks for all the feedback. I revisited the boat and got the following close up picture of the separation. I also felt the transom area and everything felt solid. I did not tap on the transom to see if both sides sound the same. I will visit the boat again later and respond with how it sounds.

Thanks again for all the help...

If it was an easy fix I would think the seller would repair it before trying to sell. I think I would pass. The closeup looks knarly.

Maybe. since you are buying from a dealer, get him to fix it BUT FIRST be there when he removes and opens it up, to inspect for transom rot as the others said.

It's a nice looking boat, though.

Also, I generally don't trust anyone who puts religious symbols in his business advertising.

How many owners have there been for this boat? This should have been fixed under the original owners warranty? You may also be able to contact the manufacturer with questions or help. Many quality manufacturers support their used market as well. It helps them with quality research and market saturation data so they know when its time for a new model.

With the motor tilted up, push down on the lower leg. Any transom flex=walk away.

DON'T WALK AWAY, RUN AWAY FROM THAT BOAT!!! The first boat on which I had to replace the transom had a telltale crack / separation identical to that. The wood is swelling from being wet, and I'd bet is most likely already rotting. At least tell the person who's selling it this so that if nothing else he can feel guilty about ripping off a potential buyer.

If you think it may be a problem why risk your hard earned money. There are many more boats for sale. Buy one that you are comfortable with

That's what happens when you don't use a transom saver.
