Is this price fair?

I am looking at an Evinrude 9.5 HP motor for $450. It is a 1969 that has supposedly been freshened up and new piston rings. Is this a good buy or should I look for a later model for more $$? Thanks in advance.

i would hold out. that run of motors has some oddball parts. either go with a vintage 54-58, or 79-86. my humble opinion.

x2 on hold out,, the rebuild is only as good as the builder, the 9.5 is not the easy-est motor to work on. a mid 80's 9.9 / 15 would be a better choice from parts availability to performance & can be found in that price range.

I have a 1969 Johnson 9.5hp that I've owned for over 35 years and will not sell it.

Agree with all of the above comments. The rebuild is only as good as the builder. Even with a ring job that price is about $100.00 high for that engine. Also as said the 9.9 and 15hp are plentiful, parts are easily obtainable and will most likely resale easier later if the need or want araises.

For a 9.5 of that era I would never pay more than $200.00 and it would have to be in mint condition.I personally think that they are the worst design OMC ever came up with and are a real pita to work on with all that cowling.Having said that,I have two and when working right they are very reliable.
