Is this normal for a Tohatsu?

Hello Everyone,
I am about to buy a new boat with a 90 HP two-stroke Tohatsu from -99. My only concern so far is the rather strong metal to metal sound when shifting from Neutral to FW or REV. Is this normal for a Tohatsu or should I investigate this further? I am used to an Evinrude 40 HP where the gear shift runs smoothly and more or less soundless.

Many thanks in advance!

They all sound the same normally....If you are hearing something different, then something is wrong.

wHAT PROPELLER DO YOU HAVE , SINCE THE RUBBER HUB AFFECTS THE SHIFTING NOISE?

The rubber hub of the propeller does not affect the noise you get when you shift.

TOHATSU GURU,

Maybe that is the case on your engine but on my and on all others I have heard there is a remarkaby different sound when shifting with different props, one of the smothest is Powertech and worst is a rigid hub (welded) cleaver prop with big pitch, sounds so terribly metallic that you thing the case will fall in part any minute.
By the way, The #1 Tohatsu guy Mr. RAANA shares the same opinion :=

Then your both wrong. It's that simple. There is a difference between a non hubbed prop for racing and a standard prop. But, amongst standard props there is no difference due to the hub. Other reasons such as having incorrect spacers....Maybe. But not if you have the correct prop to begin with.

TOHATSU GURU,
You´d better listen up when smart people are speaking,
I know that MOTION LINE is 100% right, he has made so
many props for me with or without rubberhub,
all rubberhubs sounds different when shifting it is the
hardness for the rubber that plays the role.
I have tested props for 30 years only.

#1 that´s me.
I am always right even when I´m wrong!

Your still wrong and I don't argue with people. When you get another 10 ten years of expierence, a broader knowledge base of outboards and become a little less concerned with being #1 let me know.

Now for everyone else who doesn't profess to know everything....Every prop with a rubber hub, that is properly fitted to an engine, shoud not add to or take away an engines noise level. Differences in ptich, weight of the prop, shifting RPM, harmonic vibration, wear in the gearcase and its components, how you shift and to a very tiny, tiny extent the rubber in the hub can all contribute to perceived noise levels. In respect to Putte's concern...The problem is not to be found in the hardness of one brand of props rubber hub verus another.
