Leafing through Craigs list this afternoon, I came upon an ad for a 1959 10 horse Johnny for 125 smackeroos. So I drove out there to see what's cooking and checked the engine. It has spark and an even 90 pounds in each hole. Not bad says I to myself.I thought about the deal a bit and decided against it,upon which the owner offered me a good 2 line pressure tank and a 2 gallon metal tank into the deal.So i turned around again. Now it gets better. There are 6 gallons of fresh fuel in the tank and in order to sweeten the deal he brings out an ESKA fuel tank with rope pulley and an ESKA Flywheel.Just please relieve me of this outboard,is what he said.
I gave in,but I do have some pangs in the conscience department.I figure that come spring this little Johnny with the fuel tanks is gonna bring in about 300 box or more.
So my question is,did I steal it or was it a fair deal?

What the seller was willing to sell it for and what the buyer was willing to pay for it agreed. It was a good deal for both. Did you get a good motor and parts?? Who knows? No way of knowing that till you check them out more thoroughly.

That's not a bad deal at all. If the Johnson runs good, then it's all the better.

Is the Eska complete, or are there just parts for an Eska. I didn't really understand that part. If you have a complete Eska, then I would sell that, to get your money back. I've sold several of those and if they run good, then they'll bring a hundred bucks or so. Most of the ones I have sold, were in decent condition and buyers were glad to get them. They're light and work great for little jon boats

The Johnson sounds like it has lots of potential, if the compression is good. The tank alone would cost about a hundred bucks, if you had to buy one. If you had to convert it to a single line system, then it would be simple enough to do, because I believe the following year did have a fuel pump.

the coils and lower unit may be the gremlin in the mix.

That is the most amazing part. The coils are new and the lower unit although it is from a 1957 10 horse Johnny is in fine shape. All I have to do is changing the color from Holiday bronze into antique white.

The lower unit must be from a 1958.

I'd say you got a reasonable deal. All that matters is that you and the seller are happy with the agreed price. Personally, I seldom pay more than $100 for any motor of that era. I sold a 1959 Evinrude 10 hp last year that needed coils for $150. No matter how nice the motor is I'd have trouble getting $300 for it around here.

Well, you're that much ahead with new coils and good lower unit. The white paint for that is easily obtainable at the local marina, or you can check here:

worse case scenario, you may have to clean the carb, but that's not too expensive. Not a bad deal.

Re: Is this highway robbery?

Sounds like he just wanted to get rid of both - people do that sometimes.

I just gave away a 70hp Johnson parts motor. I could have made a buck or two off of it if I had done some advertising, but I just wanted it out of my shop. Right now I just have too darn much stuff crammed into my workspace.

I also did this in much the same way your seller did - I was in the process of selling a pickup truck to a guy, who brought a buddy with him. As we were going through the paperwork in my shop, they asked me about all my outboards, and I happened to mentioned that I need to "lighten up" and get some of the stuff I have out of my life. I sort of jokingly said I would give the 70hp motor away and the buddy jumped on the offer.

So, I gave away a motor that could have been rebuilt, but I don't care. I now have more room to work, and a young guy with three kids, who can't really afford to buy a motor right now, has something that he should be able to make a "runner" out of. I told him that I want pics of his kids smiling when they take their first ride in the boat that it will eventually go on.

I'm pretty happy with the way things worked out, and I bet your guy is too.

Sounds decent to me, I paid $100 for a 1959 J 10hp, I just got 2 coils for $24 off ebay. It still needs a prop.
Got a pressure tank with the dual line for $75.
