Is this a good prop for me?

I have a 98 Maxum 2300 SR with a Alpha one gen 2 drive and a 5.7 Mercury motor with a 2 barrel carb. I currently have a 3 blade stainless prop on the boat but it is beat up pretty bad. There's no marking's on the prop so I know nothing about it other then its in bad shape. A friend of mine gave me a quicksilver mirage prop with these numbers on it 48 19838 a41 15p. This prop is a 15 pitch and is in excellent condition. Would this prop work well on my boat? If not do you have any suggestions on a good prop for me? Thanks for any help.

Re: Is this a good prop for me?

I am guessing that the boat originally had a 19 inch pitch prop on it as I know the boat and recall that. Are you positive that there are no markings on the existing prop? It is very difficult for anyone to give you prop advice without your wide open throttle RPM trimmed out and loaded as you typically run the boat. With that said, I am guessing that a 15 is not near enough pitch for you. Do you have any RPM info from the bot before the prop got beat up? Take a read at the top of this Forum section for some info required when discussing props. Anything you can get us will help!!! Good luck! :)

That prop will work, but it may not have enough pitch? You'll know when you put it on, if not enough pitch it will over rev your motor at WOT (wide open throttle). If you're more then the rated 4600 rpm, then you must run it at reduced throttle, if so then you need a prop with more pitch. By the way, get the numbers off the prop you have now, when you take it off, and put up the info so we can help you further.

The prop was in this condition when I got the boat. I just used it the way it was for the end of summer so I don't really have any info on when it was good. I will have to take the old prop off and see if there are any numbers on it because there are none visible with it installed. Thanks for the info guys.

Your boat's dry weight is 4500, plus 600 lbs, plus 50 gal gas comes out to 5385 operating weight.

The Mercury prop selector says for 1.47 gear ratio 17 pitch; 1.62 gear ratio 19 pitch; and 1.81 gear ratio 21 pitch.

If you have a 1.47 gear ratio, it's possible the Mirage might work due to it's 15.75 diameter.

Since most of the mentioned props are in the 14.5-15 diameter range, the larger diameter and blade geometry of the Mirage will make up for a couple inches of pitch.

I'd give the Mirage a try.

Thanks jestor. It's the 1.47 drive. Also the mirage prop is definitely larger then the current prop on the boat.

Give it a try. Watch the RPMs for over revving.

I put the prop on a few weeks ago. Boat does 38-40mph at 4500-4600 rpms. I haven't seen any over revving. So far everything has went good. When I took the old prop off I found zero markings on it anywhere.
