Is this a good engine

I bought a 1987 searay seville 21 ft. cuddy cabin with a 165 hp 4 cylinder and alpha one drive, appears to be in excellent shape it was purchased from lake lanier in Ga. fresh water only.

It's a 470, NO, it's not a good engine (IMHO)

In the past month or so, seems the 165 4 cylinder seems to be the most common engine talked about here.
It's a Mercruiser open deck, aluminum block, Ford 460 head. Wierd stator rotor outboard type charging system with a raw water cooled voltage regulator (that has to tell you something) then there is that stupid camshaft seal that likes to leak antifreeze into the oil. They also haven't made one since 89.
The parts are expensive, and most are NLA (No Longer Available)
Other than that they are fine.

Don has a tendancy to sugar coat everything....
They have their design flaws, you might get lucky, but expect to do some upgrades....
From what I hear Lake Lanier has been short on water for awhile....
Do check your raw water impeller before taking it for a long ride....

You're going to get a lot of opinions on the 470.

Mercury dropped it after a very short time. so if you're lucky and get it running good....enjoy it, use it etc....but start looking for a suitable replacement for when one of the many difficult/impossible to find parts inevitably breaks.



Now if you had bought yourself a OMC 460 King Cobra.........I think everyone ought to have one of those.......

But,.....
It Still won't be Easy or Cheap.......

It would be Much Wiser to Sell the Boat,+ Buy a different 1.....

I had a 470 in a 1987 Wellcraft 2004 - 2007. The motor ran great for the 3 years that I had it. I guess I was lucky.
