Is this a good deal?

Thank you for all your help on my posts regarding choosing a kicker motor. I checked out a dealer today that had a 1995 8HP stroke Johnson for $895. He started it for me mainly because I wanted to see how noisy those are compared to a 4 stroke, and it was fine. I didnt mind the noise. Ran real smooth, and started right up. Said they replaced the water pump, rebuilt the carb, and tuned it up. Just want to ask you guys if this is a good deal or not. Other choices I am considering is a new 8 HP Yamaha for 1425 + tax, a new 8HP Johnson for about $1525 final price, or a new 9.8 4 stroke Tohatsu for $1575 shipped (I hope the guy didnt make a mistake quoting that price!)

Sounds a bit high, as NADA puts it at retail for $440.00. I would offer $675.00 if it's really clean and all checks out...

Thanks guys. I might have him do some fiberglassing behind my motor bracket to beef it up so he might go for that if Im getting other work done there. But if not, maybe I am better off with one of those new ones I mentioned. Just out of curiousity and so that I sound like I know what I'm talking about, how much would that work done on the motor that I mentioned cost him?

If money is not a major issue, you may save yourself lots of headaches by going with a new motor with warranty. I have been down the road both ways and going with new ones has been by far less troublesome. But with luck, a good used motor may do just fine, but you should expect to put more time (if you do your own repairs) and money into it -- especially if you would have it worked on at a dealer's service department. (Did they ever give you the compression numbers on the cylinders?)

No they did not give me the compression numbers. And I don't know enough about outboards to do my own work on them. True about the warranty, and the fact that I will know everything the motor has gone through. So of those three new ones I mentioned, what do you like of those? In case you aren't familiar with my situation from the other post, its for a kicker motor for a 17 foot boat for trolling and to get me back if I break down, but with future consideration for a larger boat or to use on my little fishing boat. Thank you.

Personally, I would go with a new motor. One repair on the used motor and you'd just about be at new price.

I have had very good luck with a Yamaha 5HP. The Tohatsu seems to be less well built. I do not know much about the Johnsons of today. Depending on local service availability, I would buy the Yamaha. Good luck.

I run a 93' 8hp 2stroke Yam as a kicker, and they are sweet little motors.
You probably could'nt go wrong with any of those motors.

Cheers... Canuck 16

Right, one trip into the repair shop could add another 3 or 4 hundred to the price. Go new if you can. I recently bought the new Johnson 8, do a search and you'll find some positive feedback here on this forum. Same for the Yamaha's. Whichever you see more of in your area means larger dealership/more parts available. Good Luck!
