Is there supposed to be in & out play for Prop Shaft?

On an Alpha 1 outdrive should there be any play in the prop shaft when moving it in or out? Mine does not move up or down but it does move no more than and 1/8th of an inch in and out.

My 1973 Merc 150 OB does that too.
