is there much differnce between evin.. and johnson 120 1990 v4?

i was just wondering if ther is any difference between a johnson 1990 120 v4 and an evinrude of the same becuase im lookin to buy the johnson and was wondering if it would be a smart purchase. also have the option to buy a evinrude 155hp 1987 motor i want to power my 21 ft starcraft islander should i go with the higer horse power or go with the 120 thanks for any replies jeff.

Hello Jeff,<br /><br /> The two 120's you are talking about are basicly the same. There are model variations though, Eg. shaft length, salt water series. The 155 V-6 is most likely in need of an over haul, $3,000-4,000. The 120/130/140 were all built on the same block and are very strong V-4's. That loop charged motor has a lot of cubic inches and builds a lot of torque.

For most years the only difference between Johnson & Evinrude is the color.<br /><br />On the 120 vs 155 - That kinda depends on your need for speed & what kind of water you boat in. I assume that the starcraft is alumnium. You will get great performance with the 120's and with the 155 it should scream.<br /><br />I agree with Master Tech and have had a number of the OMC V-4s & found them durable and relatively easy to work on. Having said that I would base my choice on the condition of the motors that you are looking at.
