I was kind of hoping for a little better answer than that. I know there has to be something out there, and I am sure someone knows where to go.

Re: is there anything like this for cars?

There are some good make and model specific sites out there. For example, I often read www.ford-trucks.com. Used to read a good one for Dodge Durangos calls DOC (Durango Owners Club). Co-worker just boat a new VW Beetle and reads www.newbeetle.org or something similar. Best thing to do is go to www.google.com and do a search for the make/model you're interested in.

BL...

If this is the v6 bronco2 and you overheated when your water pump went there is a good chance head gasket went to.Smell the antifreeze for an exhaust smell. If thats not it try prestage.com they have a great auto message board.Good luck,Jonny

Air and water expand when heated, run it til warm let it cool recheck fluid level, you may have to do this 2/3 times.

If you get it full cold some will go into overflow then stop.

If your head gasket or cracked head is leaking it often blows air into the coolant. You will see overpressure blowing air/coolant into the overflow continously after warmup, and if you can see into the radiator, you can start it cold with the cap off and see lots of bubbles after it gets warm depending on the location of the cap. Been there, not fun.

Some older 2.9 v-6 have adjustable rockers too, they are easy to set with a feeler gauge after you force them down to bleed out a little. If high miles rocker rattle, they run better after that.

Odds are really good that you have an air lock. This is very common when A/F is drained and refilled. Air gets trapped in the water passages. Let engine cool, remove rad cap, let sit for an hour or so. If level goes down, refill SLOWLY. If the level doesn't go down, drain the rad again totally, and refill slowly.(a quart a minute) This will give the levels a chance to purge the air out.....

Could be air pocket, bad thermostat or pump (even if new), thermostat in upside down (easy to do), blockage in a hose, heater core or in the block, blown head gasket would dump antifreeze in your oil and vice a versa - dipstick would be milky looking. Try yanking the thermostat out and running the motor with the cap off the radiator, should see coolant moving. Did it ever actually overheat or just pop the excess out of your reservoir? It might have to boil down to its own height. If there is an air pocket, it should work it out on its own. The valves on the 2.9 are hydraulic not solid, only the 2.8 is solid and they stopped making that in 1985.
Mike

If you want to check for bad head gasket, one way is to remove your fan belt.. then start the motor with the radiator cap off..

if you see lots of bubbles coming out, then you have a good chance of a head gasket leak... (you took the fan belt out to stop the water pump, so the water should be more or less completely stationary.)

don't leave it running to long without belt.. you can cook it doing that, but a couple of minutes should be fine and will tell you if its leaking into your cooling system.

rgds

Frank

Gentlemen:
It sounds like an airlock to me. I'm pretty sure the thermostat is down low in frt almost below the waterpump on some 2.9 v-6. That makes air bleeding harder. You could try taking the upper hose loose at the rad. and fill it there. You will have a better chance that way without having a meltdown waiting for the thermostat to open. As far as a headgasket goes, I believe the heads are cast iron so the chances of warpage are alot less verses aluminum. Unless it has a billion miles on it and corrosion is a factor.

I can stand to be corrected!

the guys here on iboats are good, and may have already solved your problem. but just in case you have any more you can go to http://www.a2zautoforums.com
They helped me, but the advice is a little slower than here at iboats, it may take a couple of days to get some answers. There are also some others, go to yahoo.com and search for "auto repair forums" its a long list, but there are some helpful sites. Good Luck

If its the 2.8 V6 you have to remove the top radiatior hose and fill the system from their. If you do not you will get the airlock that was described. They used to have a sticker attached to the fan cover "Warning" of overheating if this was not done.

Me don't think kerstets liked the answers, or maybe one of them was the right answer. :D
If it is air pocket, you have to burp it.
I know on pre '94 4.0L Jeeps, you had to take the heat sending unit out to re-fill or you would get air in the system. They changed that in '95.
Oh well, what am I talking for, he has got it fixed or sold it one of the two by now.

Ford Truck World is good, also automotiveforums.com is decent.

SBN, I had the airlock happen on the 4.0 in my Grand Cherokee, I disconnected one of the heater hoses, used a garden hose and forced water in that way, it only took a little bit, reassembled, and the airlock was gone.. That trick has worked on every airlock I have ever had...
