I'd do it this way. Put the prop back on the propshaft, shift it into forward gear, have somebody jam the flywheel with a screwdriver or something and try to turn the prop backwards by hand. If it moves backward the hub is broken.

I just made that method up but it should work.

Just put the prop back on and put the motor in gear (not running). Rotate it until it's locked in gear and kick it. If it spins it's spun.

That's the way the LU is supposed to work. It engages hard in reverse, and will ratchet in forward so the prop can free wheel if you suddenly cut power at speed.

Now, on the mounted prop, make a mark on the hub, and also on the barrel outside the rubber. Put the shifter in forward, turn the prop backward till it stops, then stand back and KICK IT HARD in the same direction. Kick it like you're trying ti kill a mugger. Now check the marks and see if they line up. If they don't you have a spun hub. If they do, you're either a wimp, or it's OK. In other words it still doesn't prove that the hub is good.

Understand, we're trying to help you figure it out without going to the lake. The easiest way is to mark the hub and shell, then run it until it acts up, then check the marks.

hope it helps

I thank you for all your help.I'm from Nova Scotia and never had an outboard before only larger fishing vessels.I put the motor in forward kicked it as hard as I could the marks never moved. My problem is the motor works good until I try to give it enough gas to plane then the rpms go way up to a scream and the boat doesn't go any faster.I found a grease nipple behind the prop should I grease it regularly or whats it for?

Your prop may not be spinning out it may be blowing out (grabbing air). Check to see how much your lower unit hangs below the boat. Is the motor trimmed down or up?

Is this problem new, on a setup that has worked well before, or is it something you bought with the motor?

Prop can lose it's bite because it's the wrong prop, it's edges are damaged, (especially on high output motors), it's fouled, it's being run too high (varies with prop and setup)

Or the shock hub may be failing.

To know if it's the hub, first try it with your current prop, not the spare, and if it happen again, then check if the marks are still aligned. If it happen and the marks are still aligned, then it's something else than a spun hub and now change the prop to see what it does.
