Is there an O-ring on the impeller??

Hi,
I'm looking at an '89 Evinrude 40HP (E40ELCEC)water pump. This lower unit is a used replacement one and since I don't know the history, I was going to install a new water pump kit. When I showed the pump to our local dealer, he said that everything was in great shape but that the o-ring that sits directly under the impeller hub (to lift the impeller slightly off of the baseplate) was missing. I asked if he had any and it turns out that the shop has just burned that morning and their stock was destroyed! Just then the insurance people showed up and, needless to say, I felt like a heel! I wished him well, he really was a great help on the phone - I hope the business can survive!!

Anyway, back to the question...I don't see this o-ring in any of the diagrams or the manual. Does it really exist? If so, is it installed or is it manufactured in when the hub is put into the impeller? Any thoughts on how to replace it??

Thanks
Shaun

The manual wouldn't show a "O" Ring as that was incorporated into the later water pumps kit designs.

If your impeller DOES NOT have a recess in it that would accept a "O" Ring, then it does not require one.
