Is there a special set of muffs that you use on an '89 Volvo 285? The set I have for my old 2000 Volvo wouldn't allow the water to get up to the pump at the front of the engine. Put the outdrive in 1/2 a barrel and the pump worked fine. If it matters the engine is a 5.7. Thanks.

The 2000 Volvo's had a completely different type drive. You need a set of muffs for the older style 270/280/290 style drives. Also be sure you plug the secondary pickup on the leading edge of the drive just where the skeg starts.
I use the end of a tube of sealant that I have hooked to the muffs with a piece of string. The Volvo muffs are a LOT shorter than newer Volvo, omc, or Merc muffs. And use plenty of water pressure.

Thanks Don S, you beat me to my second question. Do you block off that little hole in below the intake vents? And with what? As usual you came through with the answers. Thanks again.
