I need to replace my bunks. I'm assuming I need to just do it when the boat is in the water, but is there a way to safely jack up the boat off the bunks to replace them?? probably not, huh??

Sure there is but why bother with potentially damaging your boat. You can measure and make the new bunks ahead of time. Take them with you to the ramp. Launch the boat and then remove the old ones. Use them as a pattern to drill and install the new ones. Shouldn't take but a few minutes if you have the correct tools with you and some new bolts, nuts and washers (galvanized of course).

Cap,

Then you answered my question!! You're saying there's not a safe way with no risk...

That's what I was planning on doing, but would do it at home if there was a safe way!!!

thanks.

I have before used a couple 4" straps, a big tree and a couple com-alongs to do this.
Strap under bow, 1 under stern, com-alongs secure to big tree, winch the boat up a little, pull trailer out, or if up enough, do the job right there, but like Silvertip says, just take it to the lake, much safer.

Well, there is another easier way. Lower the tongue jack as low as it will go. Put blocks under the stern. Raise the tongue jack which lowers the back of the boat onto the blocks and hence off the back of the bunks. Use a bottle or floor jack to raise the front. Or do this operation with the bow under a tree and use a come-along or block & tackle attached to a tree limb to raise the bow.

Yes. Silvertip's way does work. I just replaced my rollers by putting a jackstand under the rear of the boat, and raising the tounge jack untill all of the boat was on the front roller. Changed 4 rolers and bunks, and lowered down. Then with a floor jack and 2x4 raised the front of the boat. Worked fine. I am too far away from water. I was going to off-load the boat onto some used tires. Dont know if that would work. Dave

I've used tires for smaller boats with modified V or less hulls. I wouldn't do it on larger fiberglass deep V boats.

I've used the tongue method to clean and wax the hull. Works, but always worried about tipping and complete weight on a few contact points of the boat. Use as many blocking points and as much surface area as possible. Custom make some blocks to fit the V.

If getting to water is not a big hassle, I would do that. The ease of access to the bunks, will make the job much easier. And when you finnish, you can cellebrate with a trip around the lake. d:)

Yeah, I think I'm probably going to just wait until I get to the water... not a huge deal... and the safest all around.

Thanks for all the input though!!
