No gasket, no sealer. Most likely that's water from up above...

Re: Is there a gasket

The gearcase to midsection mating surface is normally not sealed and some water leaking from there is normal. There are other drains as well, such as the slots in front of the anode.

It is important that the rubber seals on the inner exhaust housing are tight and in good shape, though.

There are no seals in that area where the lower unit attaches to the exhaust housing. Salt and other debris will eventually seal that metal to metal junction. However, we usually seal that by coating the lower unit top surface with Marprox 1000, Boat Armor Sealer 1000, or OMC Adhesive (whatever Bombardier calls it now). It'sossible to drop the lower unit 1/4" or so to do that job.

It's squirting water preety good out of both engines in the same area. if i drop the lower unit with out removing the bolts all the way i should not have to mess with any linkage or wires right? would a thin bead of 5200 work? then just tighten them back up? any torque settings i should know about?

Thanks

I was always under the impression that they are supposed to leak water out there. If you seal it up then water can sit in there, and corrode things and freeze. The motors I have all leak water at that seamwhen I pull them out of the water or run them on muffs.

Barracuda101 - A BIG DO NOT use 5200 on that joint. You will have your worst nightmare in trying to seperate them in the future. My advice is to do absolutely nothing.

Thanks, I wont use any sealer. I guess the leaking is just a thing with Evinrudes? i have never owned an Evinrude before but have had mercs and no water has ever come out in that place with the ears on so i was not sure if this is a common thing?

Barracuda, My '98 150HP Johnny has "slots" machined in the mating surfaces of the midsection and LU to allow any water in the midsection to drip out. it is a feature of the design. The exhaust is sealed inside the exhuast tube and directed out the prop.
